今回は、数字の表し方や書き方についてです。英文契約書中に、例えば”30″を表したいときは、”thirty (30) “というように、アルファベットとアラビア数字を併記するのが一般的です。アラビア数字は改ざんされやすいという危険性があるのを考慮してとの対応と言われています。以下では、「以上」「以下」「超える」「未満」の表現について紹介します。
⑴「以上」
「以上」がその数字を含むのはご存知だと思いますが、”more than”はその数字を含みませんので要注意です。うっかり”more than”と訳しがちでよね。「以上」を表現した場合は、”or more” （moreの代わりにover/aboveも可）、”or+比較級”、”not less than”が使われます。
【例１】複数の販売店：
“two (2) or more distributors=not less than two (2) distributors
【例２】10万円以上：
“one hundred thousand (100,000) yen or more/over/above
【例３】60歳以上：
“sixty (60) years old or older/over/above/senior=not less than sixty (60) years old
⑵「以下」
「以下」もその数字を含みますね。一方”less than”はその数は含まないので「未満」の意味になってしまいます。「以下」を表現したい場合は、”or less”(lessの代わりにbelowでも可）や”or ＋比較級”、”not more than”を使います。
【例１】3社以下の販売店：
three (3) or less distributors=not more than three (3) distributors
【例2】10万円以下：
one hundred thousand (100,000) yen or less/below=not more than one hundred thousand (100,000) yen
【例3】60歳以下：
sixty thousand (60) years old or less/younger =not more than sixty (60) years old
⑶超える
「超える」は文字通りその数を含まないでそれより大きい数を表すときに使いますね。従って、”more than”, “in excess of “, “over”, “exceeding”などが使われます。まずは”more than”をしっかり覚えておきましょう。
【例】60日を超える：
“more than sixty (60) days”=”in excess of sixty (60) days”=”over sixty (60) days”
⑷未満
「未満」その数字を含みませんね。従い、”less than”, “in short of”などが使われます。
【例】20歳未満：
”less than twenty (20) years old”=”in short of twenty (20) years old”
